Nevado Vallunaraju is one of the most predominant mountains that can be seen directly from Huaraz. You can recognize it for its double-headed summit, the northern one being the highest one. Its name come from quechua, Vallunaraju meaning “mountain of dreams”. The views over Cordillera Blanca from the summit are spectacular and Vallunaraju is one of the most regularly climbed mountains because of its easy access. It serves as a great acclimatization climb.
TIP:
This is a very good hike to acclimatize. From Huaraz we go by car to the village of Pitec. On the way we pass several picturesque villages, such as Unchus and Llupa. At 3850 m /12,631 ft we start our easy hike up to Lake Churup with its blue colors sitting at an altitude of 4440 m /14,566 ft ling over steep rocks. And then we come back to Huaraz by the same way.
Day 01: Huaraz - Camp Morrena 4800 m / 15,748 ft
We drive for 1 ½ to 2 hours to reach the starting point. We then walk to camp Morrena, appreciating the beautiful views over Ranrapalca and Ocshapalca. We camp at the altitude of 4800 m / 15,748 ft , preparing and checking the equipment in the afternoon. 3 hours aprox.
Day 02: Camp Morrena 4800 m / 15,748 ft - Vallunaraju glacier
We walk about 20 minutes the second day, only to reach the Vallunaraju glacier where we get familiar with basic
