Santa Cruz Trek & Ulta This is an extension of the classical Santa Cruz trek. It starts in Huaripampa Valley. The trek includes two high passes – Punta Union (4700 m / 15,419 ft), and Yanayacu Pass (4860 m / 15,944 ft), which is close to the mountains Huascaran and Chopicalqui. Our last camping place is close to Avalancha. The trek finishes in Ulta Valley.

TIP:

  • We recommend you to do at least a 1-Day hike in altitude to be acclimatized before doing this tour.

  • Huaraz - Acclimatization Churup lake

    This is a very good hike to acclimatize. From Huaraz we go by car to the village of Pitec. On the way we pass several picturesque villages, such as Unchus and Llupa. At 3850 m /12,631 ft we start our easy hike up to Lake Churup with its blue colors sitting at an altitude of 4440 m /14,566 ft ling over steep rocks. And then we come back to Huaraz by the same way.

    Itinerary

    Day 01: Huaraz – Cashapampa – Llamacorral
    After breakfast, we will transfer you to Cashapampa (2900 m / 9,514 ft). On the way, we will pass by Huaylas Valley, observing some towns – Carhuaz, Yungay, Carhuas. Our Donky driver will be waiting for us in Cashapampa. There, we will start the trekking in Santa Cruz Valley, up to Llamacorral camping (3700 m / 12,139 ft).

    Day 02: Llamacorral – Taullipampa 4200 m / 13,779 ft
    After breakfast, we will start the trek passing by the turquoise lagoons Ichiccocha (3850 m / 12,631 ft) and Hatuncocha (3900 m / 12,795 ft). We will go up in a zigzag to visit Alpamayo Base Camp and Arhuaycocha lagoon. From there, we will descend to Taullipampa Camping (4250 m / 13,943 ft)

    Day 03: Taullipampa – Paso Punta Unión 4750 m / 15,583 ft – Cachinapampa 3700 m / 12,139 ft
    We will start our trail very early, towards Punta Union Pass (4750 m). It offers magnificent views on Taulliraju, Artesonraju, Pukajircas, Quitaraju, Alpamayo mountains and on some lagoons. After this, we will descend to Cachinapampa or Huaripampa camping.

    Day 04: Cachinapampa – Molino 3600 m / 11,811 ft
    After the breakfast, we will start descending for approximately 2 hours. We will continue with an ascend to Molino Camp. In our way, we will observe the people from the Andine area.

    Day 05: Molino – Avalancha Camping
    In this day, we will have a light trek of approximately 3 – 4 hours to Avalancha, our last camping place.

    Day 06: Avalancha – Paso Yanayacu 4850 m / 15,912 ft – Ulta – Huaraz
    We will start the day with a 2 hours trek till Punta Yanayacu Pass (4850 m / 15,912 ft). We will observe from closer the glaciers of Contrahierba mountain and the Chopicalqui and Huascaran peaks. We will descend through Ulta Valley, and we will take the private transportation to Huaraz.
